What is Anti-Wrinkle Treatments

Botulinum toxin is a drug that is used for anti-wrinkle treatments. It is a hugely popular cosmetic treatment administered all over the world with a wide range of uses. Wrinkles usually appear on our forehead, around our eyes and between the brows.
Botulinum toxin is a neuromuscular blocking drug which stops the transmission of chemical signals that affect the movement of our muscles.

Causes of fine lines and Wrinkles

How does Anti-Wrinkle Treatment Work?

Botulinum toxin primarily stops the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. By doing so, botulinum toxin blocks the signals from the nerves to the muscle. The muscle which Botulinum toxin is injected into can no longer contract.  The skin overlying the muscle relaxes and soften, which results in the removal or reduction of wrinkles and lines. By preventing facial lines from being made, anti-wrinkle treatment can erase the line whilst also preventing from getting worse. Botulinum toxin only affects the muscles that it has been injected into. Untreated facial muscles will, therefore, be able to contract normally allowing normal facial expressions to remain unaffected.

Which areas can I get Anti-Wrinkle Treatment for?

Crow’s feet around eyes

Crow’s feet are the wrinkles that appear in the corner of your eyes. These are most prominent when you smile or squint your eyes.

Forehead Lines

These are commonly referred to as worry lines. The forehead is the area most prone to this type of wrinkles. These lines are easily removed with botox treatment.

Smoker Lines

Treatment
The Anti-Wrinkle treatment is a relatively quick procedure, typically taking no longer than 10-15mins to administer. The clinician will first assess the areas of the face that will require injecting. Tiny needles are used to inject a reconstituted solution of the treatment into the muscle that is responsible for the line or wrinkle in that area. This procedure does not normally require local anaesthetic, however, a topical anaesthetic may be applied upon request. The injections are often described as feeling similar to a pinch. There is little or no downtime after performing the procedure
Aftercare
Anti-Wrinkle treatment is a solution that is injected into the muscle. The solution may accidentally spread into the adjacent muscles, which could result in undesired results. For this reason, we recommend that you reduce or avoid the following activities:

(1) Lying flat. Ideally, avoid lying flat completely for 4 hours post-surgery
(2) Rubbing or pressing on the injected area
(3) Exercise, especially vigorous exercise
(4) Other facial beauty treatments

The most effective way to extend the effect of the treatment is to have maintenance or top-up treatments before the effects aware off. Over time, the repeated treatments may re-train the targeted muscles to respond to the treatment for longer periods.

Typically, the effects last 3-4 months.
However, this can vary according to your lifestylea and gereral metabolism. New patients whose muscles have not been relaxed with Anti-Wrinkle treatment previously might experience the effects wearing off slightly quicker.

The results of the treatment are not immediate. It takes 2-5 days for the muscles to begin relaxing, whilst the full effect may take up to two weeks.

Avoid exercise and hot baths immediately after treatment, This should prevent the sweating out of Botulinum toxin.

 

Also for 48 hours, do not rub or massage the muscles that have been injected with the Botulinum toxin as this may increase the possibility of the spreading to the nearby muscles.
The treatment is not permanent. The effects typically last for 3-4 months. The effect of Botulinum toxin may increase in time with repeated treatments.
Treatment should be avoided by pregnant and breastfeeding women. Similarly, if you have an active skin infection in the area of the injection the Botulinum toxin treatment would not be recommended.

For patients with newromuscular disorders such as Lamber-Eaton syndrome. Myasthenia Gravis and ALS, the treatment may exacerbate the condition and should, therefore, be avoided.
For best long-term results, we recommend re-treatment every 3-4 months. As your targeted muscles are re-trained, this period may increase to 6-12 months.
The injected area might swell a little and it is advised not to rub the injected area. Also, these areas should not be massaged or exposed to hot water for at least 24 hours after the procedure. it is advisable to avoid alcohol for 24 hours after the completion of treatment.
One of the factors that may affect the duration of the Anti-Wrinkle treatment is your metabolism. People of a higher metabolism are likely to break down the Botulinum toxin at a quicker rate.

Also, the facial expressions made during exercise that make your mucscles contract may cause the effects to wear off slightly quicker.
This is a common myth associated with Anti-Wrinkle treatment and has no evidence to support it. Your lines and wrinkles will reappear the same as they were before once the effect of Anti-Wrinkle treatment wears off.
