Dental Implant Recovery: Week-by-Week Guide | WDC

A relaxed patient recovering at home after dental implant surgery

One of the most common questions we hear about dental implants is: how long is the recovery, really?

The honest answer is that most people are back to normal life within a few days. True healing — where the implant fuses with the bone — happens quietly underneath, over several months. Here is what each stage actually feels like.

A week-by-week recovery timeline

A guide to what most patients experience. Your own timeline may vary slightly.

Day 1–3

The first 72 hours

Mild swelling and some bruising are normal. Most patients manage discomfort with over-the-counter paracetamol or ibuprofen. Stick to soft, cool foods, avoid the implant site when brushing and rest as much as you can.

Days 4–7

The first week

Swelling settles, stitches start to dissolve and you can usually return to work and gentle activity. Continue with warm salt-water rinses after meals and keep the rest of your mouth meticulously clean.

Weeks 2–4

Soft tissue healing

Gums close over and feel much more comfortable. You can broaden your diet, although chewing directly on the implant site is still best avoided until your dentist gives the all-clear.

Months 2–6

Osseointegration

Under the gum, the implant is fusing with your jawbone — the process that makes implants so stable long-term. You feel normal day-to-day; this stage is invisible but essential.

Final stage

Abutment and crown

Once integration is confirmed, the final crown, bridge or denture is fitted. From this point, your implant works just like a natural tooth.

How to look after yourself in the first few days

A little planning makes the early days much smoother:

  • Stock up on soft, nourishing foods — soups, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, smoothies, yoghurt.
  • Sleep slightly propped up for the first two nights to reduce swelling.
  • Use an ice pack against your cheek in short bursts on day one.
  • Avoid alcohol, smoking and strenuous exercise for at least 48 hours.
  • Keep the rest of your mouth meticulously clean — brushing supports healing.
