Do Dental Implants Hurt? An Honest Answer | WDC

The honest answer: during the surgery, no — you shouldn't feel pain. After the surgery, most people describe mild discomfort, not pain. Far less than they were expecting.

Worry about pain is the single most common reason people delay dental implant treatment. Let's walk through what actually happens, so you can decide based on the facts rather than fear.

During the implant placement

Implant surgery is carried out under local anaesthetic, just like a filling or extraction. The area is fully numbed before we begin. You will feel pressure and vibration, but not sharp pain.

Many patients are surprised by how routine it feels. We work at your pace and check in regularly throughout.

If you're anxious — sedation is an option

For patients with strong dental anxiety or larger procedures, we can offer conscious sedation in addition to local anaesthetic. You stay awake but feel deeply relaxed, with little memory of the appointment afterwards.

If anxiety is what's holding you back, please tell us during your consultation. It is one of the most common conversations we have.

After the appointment

Once the anaesthetic wears off, you may feel:

• Mild aching around the implant site for 2–3 days
• Some swelling and occasional bruising in the cheek or jaw
• Tenderness when chewing on that side for a few days

Most patients manage with paracetamol or ibuprofen. Many compare it to the discomfort after a routine tooth extraction — and often a little less.

How long does any discomfort last?

For most people, day 1 is the most noticeable. By day 3, most discomfort has settled. By the end of the first week, the area usually feels normal again — even though the bone is still healing underneath.
